B8. B. What is your relationship with reading now?

B8. B. What is your relationship with reading now?

My relationship with reading is a bit complex. I genuinely enjoy reading and i am a reasonably fast reader but my interest fluctuates on a long term basis. I hadn't read a damned thing of my choosing for months near the end of last years quarter and it was even difficult to read the pieces that had been assigned to me for classwork. Then, suddenly, I had the urge to read Sherlock Holmes. When I say "read Sherlock Holmes" i mean i acquired every short story, novel, and other material Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ever wrote in his lifetime and plowed through over one thousand legal size, double column, single spaced, 8 pt font pages in just over two weeks. I hardly did anything but read for that entire period. Then i read the rest of Conan Doyles work including his collaborations, political works and various short stories. Now that i have moved on to reading the children's stories for this class i must admit that it is both very strange and very enjoyable to read something simple and straight to the point with copious quantities of pictures. I even began doodling ideas for pictures in the book we are required to write in a week or two.

  1. I wonder what sparked your sudden thirst for Sherlock? Was it the movies, or the new TV show? Which I think is pretty entertaining for TV anyways (don't take much time for watching the tube). Its fascinating that you decided to read every Doyle text ever written in two weeks! Quite the feat. Was this at the beginning of summer break? Maybe its that school takes up all the time we would otherwise dedicate to leisure reading (does for me).

  2. In HIgh school I actually had a similar urge to do a very similar thing with Conan Doyle, but I just read the mysteries ( I do not know what else he has). I do not remember how successful I actually was. I read the stories in about a week (I think). I am also a pretty fast reader as well but in my case it matters how engrossed in the material I get. It can take me several days to several weeks depending on the how interesting the material is to me. I was also curious about what brought on this thirst for Conan Doyle. I remember mine was from reading Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express" and it made me want to reread Sherlock Holmes.

  3. I agree. It is such a transition reading something so short but yet interesting. I find it amazing how a five page story can teach you a lesson in a matter of minutes. Why can't school be the same? ha. I feel the same as you, I get so burnt out reading assignments of which I have no interest in during school that I find myself just not reading. It is nice to get to that breaking point where you can select a reading of your specific pleasure.
